On April 7, 2016, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) held its annual awards ceremony to honor the best in film, television, and video games.

On the video game side there was an obvious upset that many people and critics are less than happy with.

Fallout 4 took best game.

It didn’t take good game, it didn’t take great game. No, it took Best Game against the nominees of Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Rocket League, Life is Strange and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Having only played Fallout, Witcher and Metal Gear, I do not have the most comprehensive knowledge of the best game field. However, having played those three titles, I can tell you which one was the weakest: Fallout 4.

Fallout 4, while fun, did not do anything revolutionary in gaming. Sure, it gave you the ability to build settlements which didn’t always work out due to bugs. It gave you a wide open world to explore which had a lot of bugs and glitches. It gave you hundreds of quests to finish, some of which you couldn’t due to bugs. See the pattern?

Even without the bugs, Fallout 4 did not win any other categories and yet still won best game. That would be akin to Star Wars: The Force Awakens having won Best Picture at the Oscars even though it hadn’t won any other category. Except that at least Star Wars was nominated for a few categories such as effects and musical score. Fallout 4, wasn’t even nominated for any other category save for Best Game.

Awards Ceremonies are rarely perfect.

There’s always some slight, something that this academy or that academy overlooked. But having Fallout 4 win Best Game is bananas.
