Because Telltale's Game Of Thrones title was released in 2014, it’s not necessarily on a lot of our radars anymore.
Sure, Telltale’s signature episodic release style kept the game running for a little while, but two years is a lot of time in the gaming world, and the 2014 title already feels dated. Throw in the fact that HBO’s Game Of Thrones show has been moving on in the meantime, with people now buzzing about season seven rumors, and the first season of this game feels even more like a relic.
At the time, however, Telltale’s venture into Game Of Thrones territory was a pretty significant move. HBO’s show and George R.R. Martin’s novels had become something of a pop culture phenomenon already, and yet at that point there had been surprisingly little progress toward a meaningful adventure game based on the story. Indeed, at that point the most mainstream Game Of Thrones video game out there was an online slot reel based on the show. The slots are enjoyable for fans, allowing them to choose which house to serve before trying their luck with spins to the tune of some of the show’s music playing in the background. But as much as it may have stood out in online gaming, it wasn’t a traditional game.
Meanwhile, a few other console and PC titles, such as 2012’s Game Of Thrones by Cyanide, more or less fell flat. Telltale, in 2014, really produced the first great Game Of Thrones video game, covering a narrative moving from season 3 through season 5 of the show, and allowing players to control a fringe house in the midst of the conflict for Westeros. Though the game got most of its attention for its release to Xbox and PlayStation consoles, it was also available on Windows and OSX, and mobile versions for the iOS and Android stores were made as well.
But, as stated, it’s now been a while since 2014’s Game Of Thrones came to an end with the conclusion of its sixth episode. And fans have been waiting ever since for a return to this immersive, point-and-click Westeros adventure. Telltale actually announced toward the end of 2015 that they were in fact working on a “second season” of the game, but 2016 came and went without any sort of release in this regard—or really even any follow-up news. In the meantime, Telltale has seemingly moved on to a few newer titles, such as its Batman series and an upcoming Marvel game (based on The Guardians Of The Galaxy).
However, the second season of Game Of Thrones is still said to be in development, and a recent report about Telltale’s plans for 2017 stated that it’s very possible season two will be released, given how much time has elapsed since its release. It’s likely that the second season will cover events from seasons six and seven of the show, which may sound limiting. But for those who are watching, it’s clear that there’s more than enough excitement at this stage of the show to fill a Telltale game and then some.
