Conarium: Testing the Limits of Nature

Written by

Fans of Lovecraftian horror may have a new treat on the horizon.

Developer Zoetrope Interactive and Publisher Iceberg Interactive are working together to create an interactive story about four scientists delving into things man was probably not meant to know. Conarium, a game set after the events of the novella “At the Mountains of Madness,” is slated for release in 2017 on Steam and consoles. Information is still limited, but the visuals created in the Unreal 4 engine seem to be well put together and very atmospheric.

Zoetrope is known primarily for their excellent atmosphere building and graphics in the Darkness Within games. They have a very apparent love for Lovecraftian storytelling, which is not for everyone but is an underrepresented niche in gaming. Any fans of their prior games should probably keep an eye on development at their web page going forward.

The developers have teased that death will be more than a mere game over screen, and will sometimes lead to new information and secrets that may advance the story further. Conarium will task you with exploring an Antarctic base as well as strange visions or hallucinations. Zoetrope promises an experience filled with both Easter eggs and hidden secrets; players will need to work for the full picture. Of course, given the nature of the setting, fully understanding what is going on might be a bad idea.
