War of the Chosen adds so favorably to the original XCOM 2 experience that fans should consider it near-perfect as well as essential. Although some features in XCOM 2: War of the Chosen,such as soldier bonds and propaganda, are inadequately manifested, most new features blend seamlessly with the base title and solve predictability and stagnation issues that once plagued early game. The titular Chosen adversaries enrich your gameplay with increased risk and challenge, even as resistance faction allies offer diversity in how you may combat them.

Pixel Wizards announced Chessaria: the Tactical Adventure, to be released in October. The development studio, founded in 2016 in Paris, France, by Matthieu Baldy and Sevan Kessissian, presented the upcoming Steam release as the first turn-based tactical game based on chess at its core.

At gamescom 2017, Gaijin Entertainment announced that its vehicular combat MMOG War Thunder will soon add a sixth rank for Ground Forces via the upcoming New Era Update. The new rank will feature armored vehicles from the 1960’s through the 1970’s and introduce new ground combat technologies, such as composite and reactive armor.

Imagine the year is 2089 and the Cold War never ended. You would, of course, be a burly, time-traveling cyborg-agent who goes to dance clubs to flirt with and/or kill other burly men, right? Of course you would; the self-described tech-noir All Walls Must Fall is so chillingly accurate that an alternate history textbook could be written based off of it.

Right now, Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition is very much (if not only) a sum of its parts; luckily, Massive Damage made sure that each of those parts is well-executed. Hopefully, the developers continue their momentum and keep adding gameplay elements; with more variation in crew selection, the ability to actually build a ship with components you gather, and an expansion of the world in which the game persists, Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition can be a triumph.

Strategy-oriented indie publisher Slitherine announced Empires Apart just over a year ago, highlighting their enthusiasm in the prospect of working on a modern RTS. In their press release, Slitherine stated that “games like Age of Empires have forged the way we play strategy games nowadays, but the genre has been neglected for a long time now and we really wanted to reimagine the gameplay style with developer DESTINYbit.”

Larian Studios has today unveiled details on Game Master Mode in the upcoming RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2. This mode will let fans of tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder create their own pen and paper campaigns from top to bottom, using Divinity’s unique combat system to bring battles to life.

Dawn of War III is very a solid foundation for the future of the franchise, but it lacks fresh flavor. The expansions to this title are sure to add races, storylines, and mechanics that are simultaneously new and nostalgic, but this initial release is somewhat bare-bones.

When Order of Battle moved to free-to-play just under a year ago, Slitherine and The Artistocrats officially started a move to offer wargames to its audience with the goal to attract new players to the challenges and complexities of deep turn-based strategy games. This undertaking sparked a new life for the franchise.

After the reveal at GDC and PAX East last month, Lionsgate and Big Star Games today are announcing a May 18 launch date for Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days. Also released is a cinematic trailer that explains the game’s Time Rewind system and confirms the launch date for Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days, the top-down strategy action with the time back twist.

Dawn of War 3, by Relic Entertainment, is a worthy successor to the first two installments in the series. While it struggles to implement the grimdark theme of Warhammer lore visually, the title manages to reference the theme through its elite units. The heroes and doctrines a player chooses before a multiplayer battle offer the possibility to customize strategy and develop individual playstyle. 

The attention to detail in the game mechanics, the developers’ efforts to maintain relevance and historical accuracy, and the rewards of mastering its intricacies set Afghanistan '11 apart as an exceptional title. However, an unusually steep learning curve, which might be hard to accept for someone who wants to casually try a turn-based strategy game, keep this release from broader appeal.

Many issues, like linear progression and limited AI, that I have with Wildlands are issues rooted to the ‘open-world’ genre, and therefore not worth holding against Ubisoft. Wildlands offers a tight finesse for a shooter, and is sure to be enjoyed by gamers; however, it does little to go beyond this.

As of now, Quarantine doesn’t do enough to distinguish itself from others in the strategy genre, but the potential is there: Quarantine could easily polish up and add more content to boost replayability, creating a much more fulfilling gaming experience.

Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach provides deep gameplay with a simple recipe: easy-to-learn combat rules and units… lots and lots of unique units. Despite minor bugs and a lack of flair – no cutscenes, little narrative, not much in the way of physics – Sanctus Reach is a solid entry in the Warhammer franchise, and an excellent turn-based tactical game to boot.

Zombie City Defense 2 does a lot of things but doesn’t quite know what it wants to be. It seems trapped between strategy and tower defense, and while a combination of the two sounds enticing, it just doesn’t have the dexterity to do both at the moment. It’s a fun concept when things make sense, but for now, it's still prone to bursts of enjoyment against waves of frustration.
